Her specialty areas are stress management, trauma, grief, anxiety, anger, depression, relationship issues, parenting and aging well; and her primary modality is individual therapy with adults.

Margit empowers her clients to Move from Reactivity to Resilience. She teaches people how to use self-directed neuroplasticity to move from reactivity in the primitive brain stem to effective functioning based in the brain’s frontal lobes.

Many people think of therapy as an in-depth analysis of childhood. While insight and catharsis about the past can be very valuable, they do not always lead to the lasting change we seek. The most important benefit of revisiting the past is to develop self-compassion by placing our suffering into context. For example, if we have a highly critical inner voice, it is helpful to understand that this comes from hurtful experiences from our childhoods. When we see this more clearly, we can hold ourselves with greater kindness, thus supporting the practice of Gentle Awareness which is essential for healing.

Margit teaches clients to bring Gentle Awareness to observe their thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and behaviors. Though we cannot observe the brain directly, we can learn to recognize when we are reactive versus when we are being resilient by noticing our bodily sensations. The brain oversees a natural inner pharmacy that sends chemicals out into our system that impact how we think and feel. Our body is regularly sending us signals, we just need to tune in so that we benefit from this natural feedback loop.

Meaningful change requires shifting old patterns of emotion, habits of mind, and bodily reactions. In and of itself, insight about the origin of these dysfunctional patterns doesn’t create the change we are seeking. Such change comes from behaviorally, cognitively and emotionally Stretching in New Directions, which in turn impacts the wiring of our brains and what our inner pharamacist doles out. Fighting with our old patterns of thinking and feeling only continues to strengthen the dysfunctional brain wiring. Instead we add-in new healthy patterns / neural networks and repeat them until they become our dominant mode of operation.

psychologist resilience trainingCutting-edge research is illuminating the power of the brain’s neuroplasticity. Science once taught that the brain was malleable only during childhood and then our brain’s development was fixed. Recent brain imaging research has dismissed these ideas. We now know that as we stretch ourselves mentally, emotionally and behaviorally, our neuron’s dendrites stretch with us, creating new neural networks in our brains. With repetition, new networks expand and become our new habits. As we cultivate healthy ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, we change our brains.

Margit teaches her clients the science of why we get stuck. This knowledge enriches their Gentle Awareness and creates space around their dysfunctional patterns, offering the opportunity to make new choices. Margit empowers clients by sharing strategies for Harnessing the Brain’s Neuroplasticity and inner pharmacy in order to experience and explore new options. To support their new resiliency habits, she helps clients develop Realistic Daily Practices essential for brain change.
